Using Sign-Up Lists with JAWS

Sign-Up Lists

A sign-up list can be added to a subject to provide students with a means of signing up online for group work, tutorials, essay titles, projects, etc. Subject coordinators may specify how many students can sign up for a list, and if students can see who else has signed up. An optional reserve waiting list can also be created, and students on the reserve list will be automatically notified by email if a place becomes available on their preferred list.

1.1. Navigating to the sign-up list

If you are new to the LMS, the most effective method for familiarising yourself with the layout of any subject page is to arrow through it. The methods below provide shortcuts for people familiar with their LMS subject pages.

Once you are inside your LMS subject:

You are now somewhere in the area of your subject where the sign-up list is located. Exactly where you are varies depends on the page. You need to position yourself at the top of this area to navigate successfully to the sign-up list.

You are now situated at the section of the LMS subject page where the sign-up list (and maybe other items) will appear.

1.2. Navigating through a subject sign-up list

Information on the page may include:

You will return to the previous page consisting of the sign-up list options

1.3. How to sign up to a list

If the list is not full you can sign up to this activity or group.

Follow the steps below:

A message informing you that you have signed up will appear. JAWS will read 'you have been successfully added to the list'.

You will return to the previous page.

1.4. Withdrawing from a list

You have the option to withdraw from an activity / group list if you want.

Make sure you have the subject list you want to withdraw from open

JAWS will automatically read the message 'Internet Explorer: OK Button Cancel Button. Are you sure you want to withdraw from this list? Someone else will be given this place. This action can not be undone'.

Note: to reread the message

The only text JAWS reads off the screen is the 'Cancel' button and the 'OK' button.

If you entered on OK, a message appears informing you that you have successfully been removed from the list.

1.5. Reserve lists

Some subjects offer a reserve waiting list. If the main list is already full students can sign up to the reserve list. Students on the reserve list will be automatically notified by email if a place becomes available on their preferred list. Check the activity/group sign-up list to see if this option is offered in the subject.

For students experiencing disability, some aspects of the LMS may present access difficulties. If you need any assistance or advice about using the LMS, or would like to book a consultation about your LMS subject please contact the Disability Liaison Unit at dlu-enquiries@unimelb.edu.au
