Using Tests and Surveys with JAWS

Tests and Surveys

You may be asked to complete a test or survey within the LMS. There are 17 different question types (including multiple choice, fill in the blank, short answer, matching and calculated numeric) which may be used in any combination to generate tests and surveys. Grading is automatic for questions with set responses (eg: multiple choice) with manual grading required for open-ended questions (eg: short answer). Test results may or may not be recorded; a survey is anonymous and individual results are not recorded.

The term quiz is often used to refer to a test that isn't included in any formal assessment; however you should always check whether or not the test or quiz will contribute to your marks. Subject coordinators will choose the conditions and structure of each test, e.g. whether single or multiple attempts are allowed and the types of feedback available. Some test results may be displayed via the My Marks link in the subject menu or the View Marks link in the Tools module on the My Home tab.

The instructions in this guide will describe the process needed to access a test within a content page of your subject; the instructions also apply to surveys.

Note: Some tests have time limits. Please make sure you have allocated enough time to complete the test within the given time limit. Some tests force completion in a single session, others allow a test to be saved and resumed later. Some tests will present all questions on the same page; others display one question at a time. Tests can be customised to allow different test conditions for students requiring these accommodations. Please contact the Disability Liaison Unit to discuss your requirements at dlu-enquiries@unimelb.edu.au

1.1. Navigating to a test

A test is most commonly located within a content page of your subject. If you can't locate the test, check with your lecturer as to where it may be located.

If you are new to the LMS, the most effective method for familiarising yourself with the layout of any subject page is to arrow through it. The methods below provide shortcuts for those familiar with their LMS subject pages.

Once inside your LMS subject:

You are now somewhere in the area of your subject where the test is located. Exactly where you are varies depending on page. You need to position yourself at the top of this area to navigate successfully to the test.

You are now situated at the section of the LMS subject page where the test (and maybe other items) will appear.

1.2. Opening a test

You can take a test using the following steps.

1.3. Test display

Tests may be displayed in different ways. Below is an example of how a test may appear.

1.4. Selecting answers

Questions may appear one question at a time or all on the same page.

1.5. Finishing a test

When all the questions have been completed you can select either of the following options:

The 'save and continue' will allow you to save all current answers and review answers (if allowed by lecturer) before submitting.

The 'save and submit' option will save your answers and submit them for review.

For students experiencing disability, some aspects of the LMS may present access difficulties. If you need any assistance or advice about using the LMS, or would like to book a consultation about your LMS subject please contact the Disability Liaison Unit at dlu-enquiries@unimelb.edu.au
